On October 13, 2026, Shopify launched Shop MCP, a way for any MCP-compatible AI agent to search Shopify Catalog, build a cart, and complete checkout with Shop Pay without the shopper leaving the conversation. No partnership with Shopify is required.
For merchants, the takeaway is simple: your product data, prices, inventory, and policies are now being read by more AI agents, and some of those agents can place orders. Here is what changed, how it works, and what to check in your store this week.
What happened
Shopify's developer changelog describes Shop MCP as a single MCP (Model Context Protocol) connection that lets an agent "search Shopify Catalog, build carts, and complete Shop Pay checkout." It runs at mcp.shop.com, covers more than 1 billion products in Shopify Catalog, and doesn't need an API key for search. (Shopify changelog)
For shoppers, Shopify is selling it as a "personal shopper." Its new shop.md page reads "Turn any agent into your personal shopper," and promises personalized search, one-click Shop Pay checkout, and order tracking in the Shop app.
The Verge calls this an expansion of a deal from September, when Shopify partnered with Meta so Meta's Muse agent could browse and buy for people. That took a partnership integration. Now shoppers "can use any agent without a partnership integration." The Verge also says the catalog of over a billion listings includes items both on and off Shopify storefronts.
How it works for shoppers
- Connect a Shop account. The shopper links their agent to their Shop account. MCP clients like Claude and ChatGPT handle the sign-in. (Shopify changelog)
- Search with personalization. Once a shopper is signed in, search uses their saved sizes and preferences. (Shopify changelog)
- Set rules. According to The Verge, shoppers can give the agent rules, like a budget limit or a request to show only products with fast shipping.
- Approve purchases. By default, the agent fills in the checkout and the shopper approves every purchase. Shop's Help Center also lists an optional "Allow agent to pay for me" setting. With it on, the agent can buy without asking each time, within a weekly, monthly, or total budget the shopper sets. (Shop Help Center)
- Check policies. Agents can read a store's published return policy. When an agent buys for someone, it accepts the store's shipping, refund, return, and cancellation policies on their behalf. Shop even suggests that shoppers tell their agent things like "Don't buy items from stores that don't accept returns." (Shop Help Center)
How it works for merchants
- Orders look like any other order. Shopify says orders placed through an agent "appear in the merchant's Shopify admin like any other order." (Shopify changelog)
- You still own fulfillment. Shop's Help Center says the store "remains responsible for fulfilling your order and handling returns, refunds, warranties, and product support." (Shop Help Center)
- Catalog inclusion is automatic if you're eligible. Eligible products go into Shopify Catalog without any extra steps. Requirements include a Starter plan or higher, no private (password) mode, a title, at least one image, a price above $0, being published to your online store, Hydrogen, or Headless channels, and an identifiable product URL. Your account also needs to be in good standing. (Shopify Help Center: Catalog requirements)
- Some categories are excluded. Examples include alcohol, tobacco and vaping, CBD, weapons, services and add-ons (including subscriptions and extended warranties), event tickets, and products Shopify classifies as "Uncategorized." (Shopify Help Center)
- Your status is in the admin. Go to Sales channels > Agentic > Sources > Shopify Catalog to see how many of your products are in Catalog, or why your store isn't eligible. (Shopify Help Center)
Why it matters for DTC brands
Shopping is moving into agents. Shopify says that before Shop MCP, an agent could find a product but had to send the shopper to the store's website to pay, "which often caused drop-off." Now a signed-in shopper can pay with saved Shop Pay details without leaving the agent. (Shopify changelog) Fewer shoppers will reach your product page before they decide.
Your data has to do the selling. Shopify Catalog sends your title, description, options, images, price, availability, and other key attributes to agents in structured form. (Shopify Help Center) If an agent is matching a request like "waterproof, under $150, arrives by Friday," a gap in your data is a gap in your eligibility for that answer.
Being in Catalog doesn't guarantee you'll show up. Shopify says inclusion "doesn't guarantee that a product will appear in a specific AI answer, be ranked in a specific position, or be displayed by every channel." (Shopify Help Center: Shopify Catalog) Data quality is one of the few levers you control.
Policies become rules. Agents can read your return policy, and shoppers can tell agents to avoid stores with policies they don't like. A vague policy can now rule you out of a sale with no human ever reading it.
What to do this week
- Check Catalog eligibility and mapping. In Sales channels > Agentic, confirm your product count in Shopify Catalog and fix any ineligibility reason. If your titles, descriptions, or categories live in metafields, metaobjects, tag prefixes, or delimited titles, use Review product data mapping to point Catalog to the right source. Then check that variants that belong together are grouped into one listing. (Shopify Help Center: Catalog Mapping)
- Use compare-at prices only for real markdowns. In Catalog Mapping, a Compare-at switch controls whether agents get your compare-at price. When it's on, Catalog sends it only when it's higher than the current price, and agents "might use it to advertise strikethrough pricing." (Shopify Help Center) If your compare-at prices are inflated or out of date, clean them up or turn the switch off.
- Structure size, materials, and shipping details. Assign product categories so you can use category metafields like size, fabric, and color. (Shopify Help Center: Metafields) Shoppers can tell agents to show only fast-shipping products (per The Verge), so make sure your shipping speeds and delivery times are accurate and clearly stated.
- Tighten inventory accuracy. Catalog keeps inventory and pricing up to date across AI channels (Shopify Help Center), so it will only be as accurate as your Shopify inventory. Fix overselling settings, sync gaps with your 3PL or ERP, and phantom stock.
- Make shipping and returns policies explicit. Shopify recommends complete, up-to-date store policies so agents give shoppers the right answer. (Shopify Help Center: Optimizing products) State the return window, condition rules, who pays return shipping, and any final-sale exclusions in plain language.
- Improve product data quality. Shopify lists the fields AI platforms look at: title, description, images, type, vendor, collections, tags, barcode (GTIN/UPC), and variant option names. (Shopify Help Center) Fill in missing barcodes, use consistent option names, and write descriptions that answer real questions about fit, use, and care.
- Monitor agent orders. Agent orders come into your admin like any other order, so they're easy to miss. Watch for unusual return rates, address problems, or "not what I expected" support tickets, and check that fulfillment and customer service handle these orders the same way as others. Remember that if a shopper approved the purchase, Shop says their attempt to dispute it might not succeed. That makes your product data and policies even more important.
